I check plugs and cords a lot at work so I did the same basic visual/mechanical inspection. The pins and connectors are solid and don't wobble in place. The connectors fit the cable snugly and there's an acceptable degree of strain relief so you don't break the wires if you pull at a non-standard angle. . It's a small detail, but it can be a headache if it doesn't live up to that standard.
