Buy cheap, buy twice

Let me start by saying this is a functional header and will fit a '98 Civic EX. That's the only good thing I can say about it other than the photos don't do it justice. Do you see the holes in the manifold? Now you see the ones in the block? My original Honda header had holes that perfectly matched the gasket. The ones on this manifold vaguely resemble the ones in the picture and don't even come close to the gasket. Result? Loss of power and increased heat. My Civic, which faltered even between hot and cold for 17 years, now warms up after 10+ minutes on the road. Now I open the hood and am greeted by a heat wave. Maybe it's the heat shield - I should have reworked the original - but it can't be good that the hot exhaust exits the block and hits four odd-shaped pieces instead of a smooth path from the block to the pipes. Metal partially blocks the way. I have no doubt that those hard steel parts are glowing red there from the blast of exhaust fumes. To make matters worse, I put this manifold on my Civic the day before I gave it to my son for college, so now he has to drive it very carefully until the semester is over and I use it against someone else can exchange. My fault for not opening it up and checking the holes until it was time to replace the torn one. Zero chance I could return a 6 month old collector with a few thousand miles so I lost $120 on this. I'll be ordering a genuine OEM Honda to replace and praying the heat doesn't destroy the mounts in the meantime. Oh, and did I mention the fancy 13mm bolts they chose for the heat shield? Don't buy this unless you want to shorten the lifespan of everything under the hood.
