Velcro straps work great and don't hurt when worn with boots. I thought I would need the stirrup leathers too, but the velcro is enough to keep the pants in the boots. The buckles on the stirrups work but don't seem strong enough to relieve ankle discomfort. I probably won't use them. Edit: I used stirrups as my bra garter waistband for my no loop pants - and they are amazing! Stays in place, doesn't damage my delicate fabrics and is much more comfortable than wearing straps! They are also great for pregnant women or apples. It was worth it!
