Review on πŸ’» Black IOGEAR 2-Port USB DisplayPort Cable KVM Switch by Scott Gafur

Not worth the price of admission

I was looking for a device that would make it easier to switch between computing devices. For context, I have three machines, one running Linux, one running Windows, and the last running MacOs. As a software developer, it's nice to have many systems running to sort through, run different processes, and/or experiment. Even so, plugging and unplugging display, keyboard, and mouse cables can be quite a hassle. So I figured let's connect the two computers I use most often for a more convenient switch. KVM switch to the rescue! At least, that's what I thought. Unfortunately, I regret that decision, as manually switching devices is in no way comparable to the hassle this device represents. To put it mildly, it was difficult to switch from my Windows machine to my Mac, or from my Mac to Linux, or from Linux to Windows (and vice versa). In either case, one of the connections will fail and I'll have to constantly turn the display on and off, unplug the display cable and/or USB adapters to try to reconnect. And when I finally switch to another connection and then have to switch back, the same song and dance continues. I recommend reading reviews from other users and taking them to heart (as I should), especially if you use different operating systems. Definitely not worth the price of admission.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Long wait
