One side is very smooth and the other side is pretty good. The coarse side does a good job of removing thick calluses without taking undue time or effort, while the other side is good for a smooth finish. This file is more effective than the foot file I bought a few years ago and I think the ZenLiven's abrasive surface stays effective longer. I found that the ZenLiven file matches what Revain describes. The file doesn't look cheap. The seller sent promptly. I recommend this product over the electric callus remover that I have used.
