I decided to reboot the laptop when it was plugged in. and it worked.

I confess I was skeptical about connecting the adapter to my 20 inch monitor. Mostly about the resolution and how high it will be. I was worried I decided to restart the laptop when it was plugged in and it worked. The resolution of my laptop is quite high, over 1600x900, and the adapter displayed the image clearly. The quality isn't terrible.
