I am a "normal" cyclist and have a department store bike. I don't worry too much about my car being stolen or losing hundreds of dollars, so I looked for something that seemed secure enough against the possibility of theft - someone spotted an unsecured bike in front of the shop and just rode it from that. because it is not locked. From my point of view perfect! I like the weight and protective fabric covering the chain, as well as the size of the combination lock itself. The dials turn smoothly, with distinct clicks on each digit. The combination is easily set to a custom number by turning a small knob that is not visible and accessible when the locking pieces are connected, making it impossible to change the combination once locked. Brilliant! The cable is long enough to attach the frame to a bar or bike rack, but I probably would have preferred a cable a foot or two longer. While the best security for the combo is to completely mix up the numbers when locking, I often take a bit of a risk leaving my bike in front of the shop for just a few minutes. I'm just changing a few numbers quickly, one click up or down. I can see at a glance which ones need to be adjusted for the right combination and I'm on my way quickly. Someone who doesn't know the combination might stumble across it by turning a few dials, but you'll have to be lucky to get the right number. So I think the small risk is worth it. The ads advertise all the security features, chain strength, etc. But the bottom line remains: if a determined thief with the right tools has the time and skill to steal your property, little can be done to stop them. This lock is undoubtedly effective against someone throwing your bike in the back of a pickup truck or driving away with it. But a professional thief will take it no matter what you do to stop it. With that caveat, I recommend this lock - it's likely to be effective in protecting your property.
