Review on πŸ•°οΈ Artisanal Elegance: Abong Handcrafted Mechanical Wooden Pendulum by Chris Ledet

Prepare for lots of sanding and graphite coating.

Please note this is an expert level kit and may be difficult for those (like me) with no woodworking experience. But with enough perseverance and fine tuning in the end, success is possible. There's quite a bit of sanding/pencil involved here. Each small cog tooth needs to be covered with a large amount of pencil lead (pencil is included, but I used hard graphite from art class because sharpening a wooden pencil quickly becomes redundant). try not to cut the path (I ended up gluing the pendulum anchor directly to the ground plane "because it had an outline" and then I had to cut into the wood disc to keep the pendulum from touching the ground plane). The quality of the kit is not very accurate. For example, the base plate was slightly warped and I had to grind a few millimeters (rather skillfully) of the control arm to align the gears. Each hole is too narrow so I had to use a drill to widen them to allow the pins to go through. It's a little easier than grinding wooden pencils. The first time the clock worked for about 2 minutes and then stopped. So I fiddled around and added metal washers to align the gears a bit better and then it started working a lot longer. build quality. [Update in a month] Pendulum adjustment was clearly not enough, since the watch was lagging behind the adjustment screw by 30-40 minutes a day at every point. Eventually I add extra weight to the second pivot of the pendulum and after playing around with the number of pucks the clock ran "almost right" - for a minute a day, what a clock that's hard to beat Determining time within a minute is great. Extra lubrication has also come a long way, and the watch has been running almost non-stop for the past three weeks. [Update after 6 months] After about 3 months of work (starting every day), the clock stopped. It worked for a minute or two and then stopped again. I've disassembled it, lubed it, and lubricated it again, to no avail. Now it's gathering dust on my wall until I'm strong enough to look deeper. Still a good conversation piece.
