Review on Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Fixed Lens - Discontinued by Manufacturer by Xavier Xavier (Xavie ᠌

The best thing I've ever used, I recommend it to everyone!

I have been working with this lens for a year now. At first, I could not get used to the 50mm fix, I always wanted wider angles, but then I got used to it and enjoyed it. Of the huge pluses, I highlight the following: the lens is very sharp at all distances (from 70 cm, but even better - from 1 m.). I was especially pleased with the sharpness to infinity - it turns out very clearly, albeit far away. The lens is very bright: you can shoot while your eyes see, the F / 1.8 aperture allows you to shoot with minimal lighting, which is very nice in natural light at dusk, at sunset, indoors, in the shade (I even shot in caves), and the spread is up to F / 21 makes shooting very diverse, and the pictures very deep in field (in the presence of lighting). I was also very pleased with the absence of chromatic aberrations - no matter how much I looked at the photographs, I did not find a blue border, and green-red contours - again, a great advantage of fixes. The lens is light and compact, takes up little space, it is very important when traveling: the lens does not stick out and does not cling to everything. But I repeat, you need to get used to the "narrow" frame - in order to shoot a person in full growth, you need to move at least 5 meters away, and if you make a portrait with a landscape capture, then you generally need to experiment and gain experience on the spot. Of the shortcomings, the most significant is the budget build quality, a lot of fragile plastic. If you inadvertently hit or drop it once - there is a big chance that the plastic latch will burst inside the lens and the lens block will fall out of the body when focusing, and with a stronger load (especially the side one) - the plastic bayonet mount may not withstand (but I have never had such no cases). Also, over time, the focus ring along with the lenses wears out, gaps appear and the lens begins to swallow dust. But the lens is incredibly maintainable, you can fix it yourself. My verdict: ideal for testing, starting with fixes and switching to F / 1.4-1.2, service life is 2-3 years.

Pros
  • Compact, lightweight, affordable, high image quality, very sharp, no XA, excellent and beautiful bokeh. Sharp at all distances. Working with the aperture is a pleasure, the 600D focuses quickly and without errors (on the center point). Poorly lit objects come out well: due to aperture, shutter speed can not be increased. An excellent option for quiet shooting in pleasure of objects, portraits. Repairable even at home. Ideal for getting started with fixes.
Cons
  • Very gentle, buzzer (nitpicking), and a blend will not hurt. At first there is not enough angle, but you get used to it. The build quality let us down - all of plastic, God forbid, drop it - the block with lenses will come off. Sometimes it over-illuminates objects, which is repaired by the software correction of the camera. Over time, it begins to collect dust.
