Smooth texture seems perfect to me.
In the end I preferred a smooth finish to a rough one because I wanted to reduce tip wear. Smooth still has enough texture that I can draw and write on comfortably. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that the installation was a bit of a hassle to get it lined up properly. Part of the problem for me is that the cut edges are not equidistant from the edges of the iPad screen. I kept trying to center everything and make it parallel to the edges until I realized it was impossible because the corner seemed slightly offset compared to the rest. However, the screen protector still fits the screen pretty well.
