I was able to attach them to any edge regardless of the material. Asphalt shingles, J-finish vinyl siding, metal gutters, etc. I've placed these about every 2-3 feet with good results (no sagging). These hold up well. I only had one mistake during installation (in the gutter area). They're small and unobtrusive, so I plan to keep them and use them again next year.

I took a minute to read the one star reviews to see why people don't like them. I am amazed because they have worked great for me. They are small and the clips are just the right size for gutters and flashings. You'll have to spread them out a bit wider if you're attaching them directly to the shingles, but why would you? Any clip can damage the shingles. I bought 200 and only used 75 or so. Some go far.

This is one of those things to think about. They work great and won't damage the roof unless you're barbaric and yanking on the clapboards or metal roof panel. I could actually grab one end of the Christmas lights and we wouldn't be gently pulling on the lights and pushing them out of the roofline so I didn't have to get the ladder out when lowering them. Bad idea as now the light is not working properly and it took me several hours to find and fix the damaged part of the cable.

Too small. They will not fit over your standard 3 inch gutter. They will work on the tile tongue, but hardly. They are incredibly stiff and cannot be opened with bare fingers. I had to put clips on the screwdriver. Wave to open them before slipping them over the shingle tongue and vinyl J-channel holding the soffit in place. They've worked well in those places, but I wouldn't recommend them. I would have liked a bigger clamp but I've waited too long and all the good ones have sold out.

My old house had wooden roof beams so I screwed small hooks all over the outside roof beams to hold the hooks and lights. However, my current house has metal roofing and I wasn't sure how to hang my Christmas lights last season. I researched and found them and boy will I never go back to Haken! They were so easy to hang, held the light securely and best of all they moved to hold the light but didn't move on their own. I highly recommend buying these for pendant lights!

Due to the low price and number of clips in the pack I wasn't expecting much from them but I was pleasantly surprised. We have a normal tile (in thickness). I noticed that some reviewers have commented on this. However, when installing, you will encounter many places where there are multiple layers due to overlapping tiles.
