The Allegro library is a cross-platform, open source, gaming programming library that handles common, low level tasks such as creating windows, accepting user input, loading data, drawing images, playing sounds and more. Allegro is very easy to use and has a very large community that is very helpful. It is not very fast - it is very slow.
