They are very spirited and sometimes very transient!

You have to be very careful with these filters. We have a 55 gallon tank that has gone through 3 or 4 of these filters (next size down) in the last two years. So far we have used two 50 gallon Aqueon filters at the same time. We have goldfish and we love to get ahead of the mess they wreak. Now we use 75 and 50. They will burn out if you drop the water too far and you will have to buy new ones. Even for a few moments when we weren't sucking water, they burned. You must, must, must turn off theโ€ฆ

Find another filter

Let me start by saying that I use a lot of Aqueon products. This unit was even bought to replace the older Aqueon 75, whose case finally cracked after many years. I received 1 and almost immediately returned it and got another. The first one had an awful smell and was goddamn loud so I sent it back. The 2nd seemed normal at first but this smell appeared about a month after using it. It's sort of a mechanical smell, no aquarium, chemistry or algae etc. Not sure if they've changed over the yearsโ€ฆ

After it had been running for about 15 minutes, I heard a dripping sound. After examining the entire aquarium, I looked beyond. I saw drips from the corner of the filter. I immediately unplugged it, drained the water and put it back in the bag. All of this was on the day of arrival. I started the return andโ€ฆ

Problem restart

UPDATE: I REPLACED THE ACRYLIC TANK WITH A LARGE GLASS TANK and am still using this pump. It's hard to do. My husband has to constantly get it to restart after I unplug it to clean it or the tank. The filter does its job well enough, but this aspect of the reboot is enough to make me want to bring it back. Unfortunately I missed my window for that. This pump is very big. However, it fits in an acrylic tank that I have. The pipe that goes into the tank is so long it almost touches the sand. Iโ€ฆ
