the box itself is ok. This is not a precision jewelry box, but the price is not like a jewelry box either. The problem is that it's too short for my pencils unless they have been sharpened a bit. I'm sorry I didn't measure more accurately, but you can assume the pencil case can hold pens.

This is a good alternative to plastic pencil cases. It was wrapped in plastic, thick enough to protect the wood, but wasn't overloaded like many other products. It is durable and well composed of natural wood. It's small, but I have no problem putting my regular #2, my Blackwing art pencils, or various pens in it. I couldn't open this box at first either but I had a large box from these folks and I knew what they thought their tree boxes are doing pretty well , so I kept looking to see what I was doing wrong. Finally I read the red paper wrapped around the box. "A ball bearing keeps the sliding lid closed during transit."
