I think it might be necessary but not for me. It's just not worth the effort. I stretched the cup holder to the point where it doesn't hold a cup of coffee. Just my opinion. I just put it away with a lot of other things I bought. The dashboard works great and has for many years. Well made but had to saw off the base to make it shorter so couldn't return it. Well done.

It was easy to assemble and install. It comes with elastic sizing rings to fit snugly in your card holder. I've used it twice in the last two weeks and it was great to just reach out and have the binoculars handy. I used to throw them in the car or on the floor of the car and with this holder the lenses stay clean and scratch free.
