Might be bad but I think a 42x56mm "combo" headset for EC (outer cup) bearings would have a lower crown cage for 1.5" tubes. Why else would I want to install a lower bearing like that?

The Cane Creek 40 headset is probably used on more bikes than any other headset, and with good reason. Don't waste money on Chris King only if you have money. But that's all you need

As expected, this offering from Cane Creek is great in every way. Superbly smooth labeled seals to ensure you can order the correct replacement. Note that you can't get a modern fork since your straight stem is tapered. If your headset has a modern 44mm 1-1/8" bore, this is for you. The crown ring fits well, and while it doesn't have an easy installation slot, a few taps with a rubber mallet will find it fits (and seals better than alternatives).
