Added as a nice addition to our shelf (our home decor has a little gaming theme including old school board games, chess pieces etc). Nostalgic but not overwhelming. Ideal for placing on top of books for decoration, on a shelf or as a centerpiece.

I was a bit disappointed when I opened the box because although the product is great the color is not completely black or dark brown, there are areas where it is what the color looks like The material has come loose and is showing a lighter color. I bought this piece thinking it would be all black.

Absolutely not suitable for bookends. Several people answered "yes" in the Q&A and recommended it as such in reviews. Maybe if you only have two small books you want to support, but not for a shelf full of books. I tried using them to decorate a shelf and it didn't work. Even though they are cast iron, they just slipped off. They aren't heavy enough to carry a stack of books.
