Made of steel, coated with something, half of which didn't twist, I had to clean the threads with a tap. They can rust, as is common with ferrous metals. I thought they were brass but maybe I didn't look closely to really find out. The steel is real, it's strong. So if you're using them on skin that doesn't absorb sweat or moisture there probably won't be a problem, but the steel is very strong so I'm guessing you won't break them.
