My daughter is almost 5 years old. She's quite skinny - weighs less than 40 pounds - but she's 3ft 7in tall so I bought 5t just for the extra space/length. 2 sizes when dried at high temperature. The shirts still fit, but she likes it longer and they shrink a little like cotton. This is a great and adorable option for young children. Just increase the size when dry hot.
