The very first clamping nut is inserted into the socket provided for this purpose. There is no hole in the socket so I couldn't pull it out. Trust me I tried. Next I drill the socket. How painful.

They work but I can see some of them getting rusty and I've only installed them twice so unlikely to be reused. I worry that I may have to replace them after this year's summer season as another year of weather could allow the rust to really settle. I also gave them a ceramic coating to wick water away from the laundry, but that wasn't enough to protect against rust. I even made sure to blow out the sockets after washing the car as I've read they rust easily.
