Great Option for a Headless Mac Mini

If you're running a Headless Mac Mini and want to share the screen from a large monitor or 4K TV, this is what you need. Plug it into your Mac Mini's HDMI port, download the free Display Menu app from the Apple Store, and run it on your Mac Mini. Then, when you share your screen, you have a large number of resolution options in a simple drop-down menu. I've been able to share the screen from devices ranging from my 13" MBP to a 4k TV to a 27" IPS monitor and there's always one resolution…

Fixed VNC on my Headless Mac mini

What can you say about a product like this? It's the perfect solution to a problem that shouldn't even exist. I spent about 30 minutes searching the web trying to figure out why VNC kept dropping black boxes and lines all over the screen on my headless (in other words, not connected to a monitor) Mac mini. I eventually stumbled across a set of pre-built or homemade dongles to trick the computer into thinking it had a monitor plugged in, which in turn would activate the GPU. I chose this one…

Pros
  • Electronics
Cons
  • Questionable senior purchase

That's not the dummy plug you're looking for

Okay, this thing is solid and I'm sending it back immediately. That's just stupid market segmentation at worst. These guys seem to sell three adapters, one for 1080p and below, one for 4k (this one) And interestingly they make a third adapter, a headless GS. As far as I can tell it's just an Edid chip on the HDMI port. That's all. This particular adapter is advertised to support resolutions up to 4k with no issues. What they don't mention (and what I want to see in the reviews that mention it)…

Pros
  • DVI to HDMI Adapter
Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled
