It was very easy to put together but you will need a screwdriver or drill to do it. There is a hex wrench in the box, but most of the assembly is done with a Phillips head screwdriver. All parts are packed and labeled, as are all large parts. Nuts and bolts only go one way, but there's no way to know if you've got it right until you've tried every bolt. It was annoying. I've always liked stair bookcases with different shelf widths so I ordered this one from Deilaly. The instructions say 35 minutes for assembly which took around 90 minutes because I find the cam assembly a bit fiddly as the cam has to line up perfectly with the surface of the shelf and exactly with the incoming screw. My adult daughter put this together for me in about 40 minutes. She was impressed with how the screw assembly was designed. Instructions are good, Allen key included. This is a very stable bookshelf that is easy to assemble. For book storage, the top two shelves allow books to be leaned against the edge. On the third and fourth shelves, the hole is quite large, so unless you have a really big book, you'll need to get a bookend or lay the books horizontally.
