Plug n Play in all its glory. After 30 seconds, you can transfer your favorite DVR recordings to this EHD for permanent storage. I've bought several and they all work great. There are a few tricks when tilting the EHD to the full side. Broadcast only one movie at a time, which takes about 2-3 minutes, or if there are multiple entries in a series, broadcast only 8-9 at a time.

I had a new dish receiver so I bought it to back up my TV recordings instead of losing them with the old receiver. It was slow but worked beautifully. Now I leave it plugged in and don't worry about moving them to the new receiver because accessing them from that hard drive is just as fast. It was really painless. I plugged it in and plugged it in, my hopper recognized it and that was it. I want everything to work that well.

I love this thing. I just wish the higher capacity drives would work for Dish Network too. I would still recommend it to other Dish Network customers. Also great instructions.

Seagate Internal Hard Drive, #ST2000VM003-1ET164. A mechanical butterfly test on the hard drive with hddscan found no bad blocks. The heating is minimal and noticeable when touching the case. Drive appears to be a winner. I think the quality of FD drives depends on what drive you put in their metal case. I believe this product uses a quality disc. The time will show.

I have found the Fantom to have some of the most reliable drives I have ever used. My oldest drive is the Fantom and it still works where other brands have failed. This Fantom drive works great with my Dish Hopper 3. I plugged it in, turned it on and the hopper asked me to format it. He went through the format and Hopper informed Hopper that he was ready. I bought 2 for the price of 2 Directv DVRs. The device works fine when you plug it in for the first time, Directv formats it appropriately (takes a while) and then everything is fine. It's a bit noisy as the DTV DVR is constantly reading/writing and all head movements and selections make clicking noises. Consider it accommodation but I had to move one of the guest rooms.
