Illuminated white charcoal does not work

I ordered this white charcoal and am disappointed that it does not work. It doesn't leave a mark once I've tried my drawings, but it works great with cardboard. So I think it only works on brown paper and other rough surface papers and not normal smooth paper.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Has imperfections

Charcoal pencils cannot be sharpened

Poor set of charcoal pencils. I don't use it for serious drawing, but for tracing and transferring shapes to canvas. Every time I use my hand sharpener with it, the charcoal breaks. Lost 1/3 of my pencil to sharp points. I don't know why all the embers are like that in all pencils. Wouldn't recommend it.

Charcoal easy to use for beginners

What I love about this charcoal set is that it can be washed, mixed or added with other colors of charcoal. Basically I used a soft to very soft color first, then medium and white for finer detail. The method used was to find a photograph, apply charcoal to the back of a printed and enlarged copy of the photograph, then glue it to the front of the pastel paper and trace the outline of the figure. Then finish with charcoal suspension for added depth and realism.

They are great 95% of the time.

I use them almost exclusively and have tried hundreds of them over the past year. My ONLY gripe is that you will occasionally come across some of these. some. any inconsistency of charcoal that has a different density or the like. It's like a tiny rock in charcoal just slides across the paper without leaving a trace. It is extremely rare that this small piece of dirt has a rough edge that leaves a scratch on the paper. Again, this is very rare. so much so that I will continue to buy and use…

Professional quality at a top price!

I'm a professional artist and I've been told that I can be a little obsessive and crazy when it comes to my art supplies because when I find something I like I'm VERY afraid to try something new ! On this occasion I received a set of art supplies that included a General Pencil and several other charcoal pencils. I was so impressed with the smoothness and durability of the GP charcoal that I had to order more and I was NOT disappointed! Unlike my favorite high quality colored pencils (the…

Favorite brand of charcoal pencils.

By far my favorite brand of charcoal pencils. I use quite a lot of charcoal for my portraits, but I always use my Generals soft charcoal. These pencils are highly pigmented and you can blend them easily with a blunt or even just your finger. Also, a white charcoal pencil is essential for me when working on portraits! I'm not a big fan of putty erasers, but this is actually a good quality eraser (and lots of fun to play with!) The only brand of charcoal I buy more than once. For those of you…

I have tried almost every charcoal and this is my choice.

A while ago I thought I should improve my tools in hopes of improving my drawings. I photograph portraits (at least I try to) mainly in photorealism. So I tried different brands, different types of charcoal, pencils, compressed blocks, vines, etc. and to my surprise, I liked this classic the most. Better paper helped a lot, little erasers and different shapes helped, even stepping out of an old color measuring tool (I forgot what it's called) all helped, a ton. But these pencils were still the…

So impressed πŸ™Œ: media to draw

I really like these pencils. I've never worked with charcoal, I prefer graphite. I was really impressed with them. First I looked for a white pen and found 3 of the same brand in the pack, but then I came across this one. Instead, I decided to try charcoal pencils as they came with a white pencil. I found them very fun and easy to mix and match, including white. It blends just like charcoal pencils. I've found that the best way to sharpen them is to use sandpaper. I had a hard time with a…
