This is a great reminder that God is our true North. I bought this as a present for my husband. It's not too big and is perfect for sitting on your desk. This is a topic of conversation and a reminder for him.

I gave 3 stars because it's a great gift. The compass and engraving are very good. Very disappointed that it arrived broken despite being in a gift wrapped velvet pouch. The glass on the bottom of the compass was broken. I wanted to give it away and don't have time to wait for a replacement.

I gifted this to my oldest son when he started the BSA program. It's a beautiful world, and since religion is such a big part of who we are, it's a wonderful quality to point north to God. Works, son is happy. I ended up buying 3 more for my other boys. However, it is advisable not to hang it in the window if you have a kitten or a naughty cat! Ours threw him to the ground and broke the glass. We're trying to fix this.

For all ages and all occasions, this beautiful compass makes a rare and wonderful gift. I will be buying more to give to my grandson, for a friend's 80th birthday and as a thank you for your kindness. And I hope to order more over the years. I simply give the compass in a drawstring canvas pouch along with a card explaining its meaning. I throw the rest away: the stand, box and packaging seem to distract me from the simple beauty of this treasure.

I don't understand how to use this compass. It doesn't have a rotating dial, which is fine. But without it I don't understand how to use it. When I look north, the red pointer is pointing north. If I look south, the red pointer is pointing south. However, if I'm looking west, the red pointer is pointing east, and if I'm looking east, the red pointer is pointing west. I was at LUNCH when I saw the poor quality of not only the compass and stand but also the packaging. A cheap box sealed with duct tape arrived completely crushed in a bubble mail envelope. I wouldn't give it away. I think the reviews about it being a good gift are on a different topic. It looks like a dollar store bauble and comes with a cheap universal stand, similar to the one you can use to hang a clear Christmas decoration with a photo in it. Very nice item. Description: The glass of the compass is slightly bevelled, which makes it very beautiful. The back of the compass, on which the inscription is found, appears to be of bronze; It looks like it needs polishing, but I think the idea is to give it an aged look. PS: it has no case; looks the same as in the picture.
