The crystal is heavier than expected. It appears to be SHAPED in the shape of a blown crystal. The pattern does not appear to be engraved into the glass but is created when it is poured or blown from the glass. My photos say more than I can here. It's a beautiful thing, and it can certainly be used for more than just sitting around with napkins in hand. It's quite heavy, as lead crystal usually is, and captures the light by offering prisms when in the right position. I chilled it by putting it in the fridge for a while and then used it to serve with potato salad, fruit salad and shrimp. I've used it as a fruit bowl to hold smaller items like grapes and cherries, kiwis and plums and I have a second one
