They are designed to be mounted to an electrical box but my under cabinet installation consisted of a series of extensions behind panels connected with wire nuts. Well, this method still works, so I attached it directly to the tree. They will keep you warm but hopefully not hot enough to start a fire. These lights are amazing. Great price and great dimming range. I also like the fact that the light falls evenly across the diffuser (no hotspots) and 3000k is a nice colour, bright but not blue at all. I personally think I prefer them to the 2700K, they seemed too soft/yellow in my room. I believe the peak utilization is around 85-90% (shaded 10-15%). We bought two of these lights to convert our basement room into a home theater. We had to fit the ceiling lights flush with the ceiling so nothing would obstruct the beam of the projector. These units mount in a conventional junction box, but when installed they look like built-in box-shaped devices. This light is head and shoulders above the last set I returned from another brand. They have a metal body, plastic shield and come with an adapter bracket. The only drawback: the supplied screws are too short. I haven't been able to use them on any of the 6 I've installed - all in a standard round box through drywall.
