Breathe new life into old cars

Great end-of-life kicker for an old computer! I was pleasantly surprised to learn that such a product even existed. I bought the 64GB version because I no longer needed it and it had a higher high to low rating ratio. I installed it on a 12 year old Pentium M laptop that originally came with Windows XP. Physically, all of the mounting holes on the drive matched those on the laptop's drive carrier, but unlike a regular hard drive, the holes on the drive were unthreaded, so each turn of the…

Didn't work for me (but it's just data)

I tried this to upgrade an old HP 8230 laptop which gave it a slight extra boost over the Travelstar has now. I was able to format this drive using gparted, parted, and other Linux tools, but couldn't successfully boot it into Linux or Windows. It starts to boot normally but hangs in between, like loading grub2 modules. After several hours of reformatting (as a former storage tech, I was embarrassed that it didn't work and kept trying), I gave up and just tossed it in the trash. I had no access

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • I vaguely remember

Bigger than normal 2.5 HDD.

If you use it for embedded system, don't buy it. If you insist, at least check the installation environment. Because it's a bit longer and bigger than the regular hard drive you're trying to replace it with. In the worst case (like my Bose Lifestyle System) it doesn't fit. The image above shows the PATA pins of a regular hard drive, while the image below shows the PATA pins of an SSD. The difference may be tiny, but you're going to run into trouble on an embedded system with a very tight…

Good Yansen SSD

In short: This SSD does a good job despite assembly problems. Detail: KingSpec appears to be buying these devices from a new manufacturer; The SSD I received was marked "Yansen" not "KingSpec". I've read other reviews that suggest the original KingSpec SSD had a plastic case with unthreaded holes; It has a metal body with threaded holes. On the other hand, it fits perfectly with the HD Caddy for my old Compaq Presario R3000 laptop. On the other hand, once screwed to the case, the SSD was…
