There are two nearly identical versions of this guard. This option is designed for grinders with a groove on the mounting ring (see photo) and is NOT suitable for the XAG20Z 18V LXT cordless grinder. If you have a 3 tooth grinder like the XAG20Z you will need 196845-3.
Definitely a guard. Used it to cut tile in places where wet cutting wouldn't work and would require hours of work and maximum disruption for a family of four to create an airtight barrier. With a zipper for some containment and a fresh filter and bag in my vacuum, I was able to cut with almost no residual dust. Since this determined where the hardwood would meet the tile, the line had to be very straight and the adjustable blade indicator did a great job.
Purchased for use on a Makita 4 1/2 grinder (model not sure) which was not an SJS as Makita claims is the only model designed for a sheath. It fitted the grinder perfectly, but to get a comfortable working position I had to cut an extra mounting groove in the aluminum case where the protective cover attaches. With all that, when hooked up to a grinder and shop vacuum, there was literally no dust visible when cutting a concrete block. Haven't used it on the stovetop yet, but I'm sure the resultβ¦
