Uneven Back for Chisel

The first step in preparing the chisel for use is to level the back. Most of the chisels in the blue chip set I bought were very difficult to flatten. Concavity is not a problem. It's the bump that's annoying. Unfortunately, these chisels were very convex. I'm still trying to flatten the one inch size. I had to send the bumpy ones back for a replacement or refund. I wonder what happened to quality control?

Pros
  • Heavy Duty Construction
Cons
  • Non-Automatic

Great Utility Chisel

I have a 1 1/4" Marples chisel. The spine didn't last long given the width (it was slightly dished). The edge dulls quicker than my expensive chisel set so I use them not for dovetail cutting in hard or abrasive woods As a general purpose chisel it does a great job - sanding glue lines, trimming etc so I don't have to use my good chisels for these jobs Its long blade is a huge advantage over hardware store chisels I will buy a set.

Pros
  • New
Cons
  • Slightly torn

Buy a 4 piece set!

These chisels are good for what they are and great value for money. I haven't noticed any significant concavity/convexity on the back of two chisels I've had over the past few years (1" and 3/4"). They seem to need very regular sharpening, but it's easy to get a good edge in no time (probably, one reviewer suggested, given the comparative softness). Very good weight and comfortable working over a long period of time. Don't hit them with a metal hammer and then expect them to be handy for manual

Pros
  • Ideal for a small home
Cons
  • A shady purchase for the elderly
