Try them on wide feet

The length is just right but give me a break, if you have wide feet or a high instep they are almost impossible to dress. For $20 I keep them to myself and now I have to wear them as flip flops and hope they stretch.

the gums in the pharynx (upper area) are very narrow; the insole can be removed for easier entry

This shoe was designed to be worn barefoot and in the water, so it is clear that it is snug, but even then the elastic at the toe is very tight - I couldn't even get my feet in until he took off his socks. Then I realized that the kit included a water drainage sockliner that can be removed and that made it that much better for me. You can see in my photo that the shoe is actually larger than I need (maybe a half size or even a full size) but the height at the neck is different than Merrell's…
