Great lens but old ones seem better than new

I have a used copy of this lens, it's about 10 years old judging by the packaging and it does works great - very sharp throughout the FF frame at f8, with no distortion. There are dust particles and smudges on the glass in the lens so I decided to shell out the money and buy a new one - it will probably be even sharper than the one I have. I was surprised that the 2 new lenses are actually softer in the corners than the used ones. I've tested them repeatedly with the D810 and got the same…

Pros
  • Low beam correction system provides high performance for near and far focusing
Cons
  • Miscellaneous Miscellaneous

Excellent quality lens but be careful!

I agree with almost every other buyer/user of this superb Nikon lens: its build quality is impeccable and its performance is literally legendary. You can see details in everyday objects that take them to a whole new visual level. My warning is this: I got a gray market lens when I bought mine from Revain, which of course means I'm out of luck if I ever need Nikon service. Nikon…

Pros
  • Nikon Super Integrated Coating to minimize flare and flare for good color balance
Cons
  • Crumpled

As perfect as a lens can be.

I bought this lens to shoot Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides again. Yes, much faster than scanning - just snap your photos! It also works great with old photo albums. This magic is "Flat Field" - no noticeable distortion, a flat object will be sharp and sharp like a razor at the same time. It actually took some effort to figure out how to do all this - if you want to do the same thing you need flat lighting just like you need field plane. I use a studio flash (but a small one will do). and sew…

Pros
  • Close-up to about 8.75" and 39 (degrees) 40' angle of view in 35mm format (135)
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
