I am amazed at how well the product is made, just magically!

Neumann U 87 and its modern reincarnation U 87 Ai are the most popular studio microphones in the world. There are Neumanns and more expensive ones, some tube models for example, but this particular model is the best, most versatile microphone in the world that you hear every day on millions of recordings. If you do not know what to buy, take this microphone. If you're not that wealthy, take the Neumann TLM 103, which is essentially a stripped-down version of its older brother, the U 87 Ai, with

Pros
  • This is the best microphone in the world. Loud transformer output and, as a result, less dependence on the preamplifier. Versatility of application.
Cons
  • One could say the price, but the microphone is worth the money.

Too good sound quality

From NT1a to NTK and now oh my god. I never think I'll ever need to upgrade my mic again.

Pros
  • condenser microphones
Cons
  • protection

One of the most incredible recording instruments in the world

I have used many different microphones in professional recording studios for over forty years. This is my favorite for vocals. It captures pure, crystal clear sound; fresh, warm and airy like no other when you know how to use it. If you don't know how to use mics, how to find their sweet spot, or if you can't hear them, don't spend more than $50 on a mic and just shout into it. If you haven't fried your ears or your brain hearing the difference between MP3 and Wave then it's worth every penny.

Extremely versatile microphone

I've had the U87 for 10 years and it's like my favorite pair of jeans. I'm a songwriter, so when I have an idea that needs to be brought to life quickly, the U87 comes in very handy. Of course, I could have done this with the much cheaper TLM 103 (which I previously owned) or any other large diaphragm mic, but the overall sound and versatility of this mic make it worth the money. I also use it as an ambient mic on drums. It rocks positively on female vocals and is beautiful, making it easy to…

Pros
  • Multipurpose microphone
Cons
  • Available in black only

The perfect microphone for REAL studio engineers. Vocals, piano, orchestra, whatever. If you can only have one microphone, this is a good choice. It's worth the cost for discerning professionals who have the ears and talent to appreciate sounds that can be brought to life. On the other hand, if you're the type of person who can't tell the difference between a serious studio instrument and $50 three-pack disposable mics, then you're good. You can save a pack and buy a bunch of other crap gear.

Pros
  • Microphones and accessories
Cons
  • No manual
