Basically point and shoot with amazing zoom. As with all heavy zooms, stability is key. A tripod or other solid surface is required for intended use. If you want to tinker with the settings you can, but if you just want to take it out of the box and start taking great pictures you can do that too. Set up your Canon Rebel with a variety of lenses, including some L lenses. it's just not the level of quality.

I love the zoom on this lens. This is unrealistic, especially for animal photography. The only thing I didn't like was that it was very difficult to record videos with zoom and to stabilize the camera. I was trying to film one of my Bluebird babies flying over the nest and had a hell of a time to steady my hand to avoid video shake. The slightest movement will exaggerate itself and it will be difficult to focus the lens on a subject you are filming. Otherwise flawless zoomed pictures. The video

Love the light weight and 500mm zoom for bird and wildlife photography. I am not satisfied with the lag time after shooting. The camera freezes from time to time and I can't get the lens to respond to zooming or retracting. From time to time the camera will say to turn it off and on again. I was able to photograph birds very well in bright light and light wind, but this is much more difficult in cloudy or windy weather. Using a tripod is almost necessary in such conditions.
