I have a very old antique hurricane lamp that had antique oil and an antique or fairly old wick that sat in it for years before I lit it. The old wick, about an inch or so, lasted quite a long time and didn't require much attention. The new replacement wick looked more like a fuse. The flame had to be adjusted every two minutes because the wick burned down very quickly and produced a lot of soot.

Oil lamp accessories are hard to find locally, you usually can only buy a whole lamp. Finding the wicks involves making a lot of phone calls and fumbling around to find out who even has them. It's MUCH easier and faster to just order it here. It's a good weight and will work great. From the proposed quantity, you can make several lamps from ceramic jars, which can be used when the power goes out. Better than electric or regular candles and they give off enough light to actually see or read.

It's winter which I think means power outages. I live in a rural area and high winds or ice can cause power outages that can last anywhere from an hour to an entire night. I have battery powered emergency lights that I charge from outlets and a generator, but oil lamps will come in handy. Just keep fuel and wicks handy.
