We have an area outside where we feed wild birds and we also have some wild cats. As cats, they tend to crouch while waiting and then attack the birds when they come to feed. We put these mats around the feeding area (see photo), problem solved. I put them in front of the sliding door lattice so my cat couldn't get close enough to scratch it. So far they work.
