The mean time between failures is terrible.

I'm third. I checked my past orders and they fail almost every 2 years. Overpriced rubbish. I called tech support and asked if they have a buy 3 get 1 free policy. You didn't give me a loan.

Great product - great support from Outback Power Systems

We had static and needed a new unit. Our dual inverter/chargers Outback, MATE and Dataport have been successfully powering UrbanSurival.com since 2008. Damn good system and great product support.

It is essentially a router for sending measurement data from peripheral devices

In essence, this is a router for sending measurement data from peripheral devices to a specialized computer (MATE3). Since my Mate3 unfortunately gets stuck in an endless boot loop, I don't know if this really works. But I'm assuming that's the case. Three stars because I think it's too expensive for a basic router.
