I have them close together, but you need to be careful how you line up the plastic tips with the edges of the wire cage to get an accurate fit. But this is what keeps the cage safe. I hate to say this as I always hate to disapprove of a product but this carrier is not worth the money. It looks nice in the photo, but it is very poorly made. I do not recommend buying it. But I have no complaints about Penn-Plax. When I ordered this and it literally fell apart in my hands trying to assemble it, I emailed them and they responded immediately. I ordered this cage to travel with my Sugar Glider. It was a lot less than I expected but it worked really well. I don't think you could put a bird here at all. My Sugar Glider is only about the size of my palm (from the tip of my middle finger to my wrist) which is about 6.5 inches and she doesn't have much room in it other than to curl up and sleep which is good, 'Cause that's what I need This is a must see as it shows in my bag most of the day.
