Cheap plastic; Not sure if this is a real coating. but I have to laugh at my son before he gives it back to me. That's what I get when I don't buy a top brand and buy cheap lol.

I have been using these brushes for many years. I always go silver (to match my chrome installations). The bristles hold up well and provide "average" tooth scrub. I haven't had tooth decay in 11 years so something I'm doing is working. Does a brush have to be? Would buy again and again. I don't like the brushes you can buy in the supermarket. You look ugly on my counter. Tynex brushes are a little bit of elegance.
