The side pockets are a little tight if you're trying to fit a large water bottle, but that's fine for standard-sized water bottles (refillable water bottles don't fit). I am a 65 year old female and bought this bag for a trip to Canada and then to Scotland. It was perfect! Plenty of zipped compartments for my phone, iPad, wallet, passport and magazine, plenty of room in the main compartment for everything else including noise canceling headphones for flying!
