Description of Portainer

Portainer is the definitive open source UI for simplifying Kubernetes, Docker, Swarm, and ACI container management. Simplicity without compromise - run and manage your complex Kubernetes and Docker environments in a simple, low code/no code manner. Get the best of both worlds - some developers support Kubernetes, while others prefer Docker Swarm or ACI for container orchestration. Portainer helps manage all these environments from a single product. Let devs be devs - developers and DevOps don't always blend. With Portainer's easy low code/no code UI, DevOps can quickly deploy apps without having in-depth knowledge of Kubernetes or Docker Swarm.

Convenient and useful tool once implemented

The visual representation of running containers in your environment makes it easy to see all you have installed/running - also helps track down issues when they occur! It's not free but we're using it commercially so our pricing structure works out well for us now. When I had an issue with one image (it was hanging) there were no logs or anything that would help me determine what happened. This can be frustrating at times as its hard to diagnose problems if something isn't logged by default…

Pros
  • Easy way keep tabs
  • Great support team
  • Flexibility around how images are stored / accessed e.g, via NFS shares instead
Cons
  • Almost never

Portainer for container management and deployment

It's easy to configure it with ansible so you can use multiple teams in different locations across your organization without issue - not all tools are like this these days! You have some of them that makes life easier but then there will be others where its more difficult (such as when using containers). But overall I don't dislike anything about portainers atm they've been very helpful working out our new infrastructure setup/deployment processes along side my colleagues who do docker etc…

Pros
  • The ability for me easily install Docker, Kubernetes + Ansbile pipelines within 1 minute via simple command line interfaces; great community support too.
Cons
  • haven’t had any real issues yet
