Ignore the controversy and just read.

As a Russian Orthodox (where at least in our little corner of the world reading the Bible is reserved for priests and is not only discouraged but generally not the business of the laity), I can see the differences between hardly comment on this paraphrase and the original text. What I can say is that this book, albeit fictional, takes a look at the lives of women at a time when they were only footnotes, if anything, in men's history. I'm re-reading this book because I saw The Handmaid's Tale.

Dina's life is a cautionary tale of a family's wonders and horrors. The novel is rich in women's lives. The story reads between the lines and reads like a biblical book written by a woman. Dinah is Jacob's only daughter. I've always had problems with Jacob. Stealing his father's blessing from his brother isn't the best way to start a story…

Pros
  • . Outstanding overall performance.
Cons
  • . I have doubts.

First criticism of the verification process. I hate that Revain insists that I use one of her descriptive words to "describe the plot of this book". They let me choose between "predictable," "some twists," or "full of surprises," neither of which is a good description of Red Tent. Many thoughtful reviews have already been published. I contend that it was wonderful to read this story from a woman's point of view. In those days women were treated like chattels and their only power was to produce…
