As a Russian Orthodox (where at least in our little corner of the world reading the Bible is reserved for priests and is not only discouraged but generally not the business of the laity), I can see the differences between hardly comment on this paraphrase and the original text. What I can say is that this book, albeit fictional, takes a look at the lives of women at a time when they were only footnotes, if anything, in men's history. I would recommend The Red Tent to anyone who wants more than a footnote read, or anyone like me who has had trouble even starting to read the Bible, especially since the stories told are missing half the people. Ignore the controversy and just read. It's worth checking out this book for yourself. For me it was worth reading, if only for a fleeting, if only imaginary, moment in which one at least didn't see that womanhood (childbirth, menstruation, etc.) was cursed with uncleanliness. Even today there are countless women and girls worldwide whose future is crippled and destroyed precisely because of this. There are people working hard to change that attitude, and a book like this, a fresh perspective, can help more than an argument.
