The 1 inch hole size is great for slowing down my metabolically impaired horse, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first hay net; I would start with 1 1/2" as there is a learning/frustration curve. I was skeptical on review as I ordered so many only to return them as it wasn't what I wanted. The first one I took out was too small and I wasn't happy.
