Good product. Recommend!

I bought this DVD burner because my old one was finished. He was old and didn't like the new two-tier format. This product works well. Excellent value for money and that's Sony. Sony usually has good products that last and the name is trustworthy. There were no problems. It also has a double-sided bezel so you can use either the black or white drive cover. He also had a light writer if you want to create professional looking discs. You should definitely pay attention to this when buying a DVD…

Expected Reliability/Quality Sony

I have had different brands of CD burners over the years and have found that the Sony brand offers consistent quality and performance. This was my third Sony CD/DVD drive. I've also had Memorex (good) and Lite-On (actually they offer technology that many brands use) in the past. I installed this on a six year old home made Pentium 4 system running at 2.66GHz and it works fine. I assume that older and less powerful processor systems in newer drives are suspect due to the processor and resource…

Pros
  • High test results for support and durability
Cons
  • There are shortcomings

Great value burner

I bought this DVD burner about a month ago and I have to say it works great. Any medium I threw at him was read and written with no problem. It burns very quietly and of course very quickly. I haven't had a single failed write yet (except once when I tried the "overwrite" option in my burning program, which supposedly lets you write a bit more data than the disk can handle, I don't know how it was planned to to achieve this, but it didn't work in the end, you might need special media). I'm…

Good value DVD recorder

My old Pioneer DVD recorder was too slow for my needs despite being a great workhorse for the last 3 years. So I was looking for something faster. SONY DRU840A fully met my requirements. It's fast no doubt, it's also very quiet, and for the price I paid ($42) it can't get any better. Just a warning to buyers. If you already have a DVD burner installed on your PC and you're using XP Pro, after installing a second DVD burner for some reason, the operating system gets confused and stops reading…

Works fine but there was a problem with the front panel. Dell XPS400

The documentation is divided into several different multilingual sheets. Kinda hard to follow. It was a replacement for a defective OEM drive. First make sure you have set the master/slave jumper correctly. If you are making the same Dell replacement, use the 3 screws from the original OEM drive instead of the 4 screws that came with the drive. I tried replacing the bezel with an extra black piece. Vain. The pane does not stay closed. Sony's support site states that this can happen if the black

Another great quality product from Sony

This is my second purchase of a Sony DVD-RW drive. The first was the DRU830A, the discontinued predecessor of the DRU840A. The DRU840A is slightly faster than the DRU830A, so I will be using it as my main DVD/CD drive. I bought a second Sony drive because both are so quiet you have to see the LED to know they are working. An earlier Plextor drive could be heard in the next room. I have found that Sony drives are not only very quiet but also very reliable and accurate when recording important…

Overall great for internal optical drives

Replacing the supplied putty colored front panels with additional black panels to match the exterior color of most modern PCs was not an easy task. The instructions weren't as clear as they could have been, the equipment was poor and it required real hand strength. Otherwise there are no complaints. installation guide is good; installation straight ahead; the included software is excellent (done by me, I just paid money for the full Nero package); and high performance disc recording.

good product, reasonable price

I am satisfied with this product. Hardware installation was easy; The software was so-so. My biggest complaints are that my system takes noticeably longer to boot, the white border doesn't go well with my putty-colored case, and the default software install included Nero Scout, a basically useless app that caused my system to freeze on shutdown. Work. Now everything works smoothly and disc burning is very fast.

  • few competitors

Sony DRU840A: Internals

I'm happy with the writable drive. I was able to install it with no problems. Good instructions and everything works. I'm not sure I like the included Nero disc, but maybe I'm not very familiar with this version of Nero. I had an earlier version that was fine.

Pros
  • Weight
Cons
  • Some bugs
