🖋️ Optimized Speedball Sketching Pen Set - 2 Penholders with 6 Pen Tips Review

I started using the Speedball many years ago and it's still my favorite ink pen. There are many other inks on the market now and many colors that can be used! Whatever ink you use, the speedball will get the job done. PS Always rinse your feathers after use!

I bought the set at Walmart for the same price before I got it. God I was a fool for wasting money. I can say I'm looking forward to testing other top speedball lines and continuing my artistic journey with this set. It's perfect in every way and I'm so happy I decided to try them after the horrible experience at Walmarts.

I bought this for a beginner in ink painting. I was a little surprised at how quickly the springs rusted on me after just two uses. Once rust occurs, it can be difficult to insert and remove the pen from the holder. Maybe you want to spend more money for a better product. Also, some pens are easy to draw on while others are terrible and just "stick" to the paper.

Took out the small nib holder and couldn't insert the small round nibs. I had to redrill the hole to fit the tips. The little pen wrote very well, as expected. Became much wider than the line on display on the way down. It was difficult to insert a pen into the large pen holder. By placing the largest tip in the holder I was able to get a nice thin line and good highlights as I moved down. It is still very difficult to change tips.

It's been many, many years since I've used a pen in art class and I've been itching to master this set. This set was recommended in the excellent book Drawing Words and Writing Pictures for the large selection of pens. It's a great set, there's a great tactile feel when using the pen, and pausing from time to time to refill the bottle with ink is almost like meditation. I used Speedball ink pens and they produced smooth, super black lines.

I bought this set for a small pen holder and was also happy to try 6 different sizes of nibs. After opening the box and trying 3 large nibs and 3 smaller nibs, I found that the Hunt Extra-Fine #512 Large Tip Pen Holder was the only nib I could work with. The rest was too "scratchy" and I couldn't write with it. Now I like the big pen holder more. I have tried different papers including 140lb. I didn't have high hopes for them to begin with. When I received this set I was definitely surprised. Aside from the spiky sharp feathers, I found it worked well. I tried using the smallest quill (I think it's called the Crow Quill but I'm not sure) and when I was done I took it off to clean it and put it away but it broke. Love this set of pens and drawing pencils. I've since upgraded the holders I use and settled on my favorite nibs, so I don't use either of the sets often, but for less than $10 you can get two sizes of pens and a couple of nibs. Everything you need to get started and find out what you like and how you work (or even find out if you don't like pens and nibs).
