Poor quality good for testing, measuring and checking

I bought this caliper 3 years ago. I thought I got the best. Not so. The 6" faceplate is thin plastic and is glued to the metal part. After a year the adhesive came loose and jammed the inside of the turn signal. I disassembled the indicator and cut 1" of plastic to allow the foil to work. Later came the adhesive into the foil and the foil didn't move. I disassembled the caliper again and removed all the glue with the MEK. Now it works fine. When checking with standards, the accuracy was plus…

For real? Is this really the way of Starrett?

After using Starrett tools for 30 years, I've noticed that many of their products are now made outside of the United States. This 799A-6/150 caliper has a barcode that says "China". Ironically, I bought it to replace Centech's port freight. This Starrett caliper shares a nearly identical $15 Centech design and build quality. If I wanted another Chinese made caliper I would just buy it and save over $80. What I really need is something better. You'd think if you pay over a hundred bucks, you'd…

    Pros
    • Ergonomically designed for ease of use
    Cons
    • Big and chunky

    Not a "real " Starrett

I have various Starrett tools, micrometers and digitally controlled and graduated calipers. All high quality American tools. It's not like this. It is made in China and looks almost identical to other Chinese made tools sold for a lot less money. It has nothing to do with my US made Starrett tools, including my personal set of Starrett digital calipers. Anyone who's ever owned a movement caliper knows you keep it in a storage case to carry with you. With my old Starrett or Mitotuyo calipers, I…
