Works perfectly: SATA cable

I received the WD My Book AV DVR Expander in April 2014. Reading reviews about it before ordering, some mentioned that the eSata cable that comes with the expander isn't that great, so I ordered this StarTech eSATA cable at the same time. like an expander. And the good thing: When setting up the expander, I somehow lost the supplied cable! I don't know how but I never found it. But I had this eSATA cable and used it. Has been working flawlessly for 6 months now. But I have no idea if it's anyโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Computer accessories and peripherals
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.

Works well, long enough.

This eSATA cable is a great way to connect my computer to a 4-Bay ProBox (ProBox 3.5" 4-Bay Hard Drive Enclosure - USB 2.0 and eSATA). The price was right and it allows me to hold the drive cage against the processor which works better with my desk setup. My only complaint - and it's a SMALL one - is that the cable's plastic coating is stiff. So it looks and feels a bit cheap. It doesn't affect performance at all, just hints at it. I don't know if this cable is actually capable of the speedsโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Requires power outlet

The price is the best part.

What consumers get for cable connections of all kinds borders on criminality. It costs next to nothing to manufacture, but most stores will charge $30, 40, 50 or more for the most basic cable, and justify this with solemn warnings that buying "inferior" quality will compromise performance, etc. And that's it. BS The reality is that unless you're connecting supercomputers together, a simple cable with no name will work just fine. And that brings us to it. Not a fancy folding bed. No marketingโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Pleasing
Cons
  • Old model

Died at 6 months and just a few insertions and removals

It worked great while it worked and gave me blazing fast transfer speeds compared to USB 2.0. I'm not sure what happened, but after a few uses and puffs, the cable died. eSATA is expected to be capable of more than 5000 insertions and removals. It took me a month to debug my external hard drive and eSATA card when I finally found that the eSATA cable was defective. Replaced the cable with a new one and everything works again. You win something, you lose something. Not sure if I got a randomโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
