Believe other reviews that say the hammer head is soft. Just a few galvanized nails were enough to crack my head open. I'm very surprised how the head stopped being flat with so little use. A chewed surface will make nail driving much more difficult in the future. And it's a shame because that hammer had a great sense of balance. I bought this hammer thinking it would be good as a percussion instrument based on the Irwin name but now it's just another reason to avoid this brand.

I went through this hammer a ton! Bought it about 2 years ago and used it every day for a year when I was on the job site. I actually bought this for my daughter who needed some basic hand tools for assembly and repairs. So I know how important a strong hammer is. This hammer has a solid feel and is comfortable to hold and use. Place nails in many applications nowadays. But I think this hammer is well made and fairly well balanced so for a limited amount of use it should be reasonably comfortable to use and the head should stay firm and secure. I bought a 16 ounce hammer to have some spares around the house. I've had two other great hammers for years but wanted an extra one to keep in another part of the house so I bought this one. The day it arrived I hammered 2 nails into a 2x4 board to test it and the steel on the head is badly dented like it's a lot softer steel than the nails.
