The power cuts out when I try to play VHS tapes

I'm like a lot of people: I have a lot of old VHS tapes, some professionally recorded films, some stuff I recorded on camcorder or turned off TV. I had another Toshiba dual player (different model) that ate cassettes so I needed a new one. The internet was the only way. I had several used ones and this one didn't say it was used despite the high price ($538.49) so I ordered it. Good, but questionable reliability.

I bought one of the original Toshiba DVDs (paid about $300) in the early 90's, great machine. It was still working when I replaced it about 10 years ago just because the old Toshiba couldn't play DVD-R. I bought this unit about 3-4 years ago for my mother in law who spent most of the 80's and early 90's recording classic TV movies. Just like my old, OLD

Just recently I had to throw away my Panasonic combo recorder/player. It's been over 20 years. I used it to record EVERY day and night until I got satellite TV with DVR 2 years ago.
